Hike launches new product ‘Total’ to allow users access to essential services without data



NEW DELHI: Messenger app Hike on Wednesday launched a new product called 'Total, built by hike' which the company says is a 'refined' version of Android. Total allows its users to access services such as messaging, news, and recharge among others without an active data connection. For this, the company has also introduced 'Total data packs' starting from Re 1.
Total can be accessed via a single login wherein the phone number will be required for all accessing services. Moreover, the services would take up to 100 KB to 1 MB space on the device, the company said.
The app has made use of its proprietary technology to make services available without data. The technology is based on the USSD protocol which does the heavy lifting of encrypting, compressing and transmitting data.

Google Play Store removes 60 games infected with pornographic malware


SAN FRANCISCO: Google has kicked out nearly 60 games, many of which were for children, from its Play Store after a security research firm found they were infected with a pornographic malware.
Researchers from Israel-based Check Point Software Technologies reported that the malware, dubbed as "AdultSwine", displayed pornographic images that looked like advertisements designed to prompt users to download fake security software.
The users were then encouraged to click on other links they would have to pay for, CNET reported on Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO: Popular photo-sharing platform Snapchat is working on extending the reach of its "Stories" feature on the web as it also continues to test a major redesign of its Android and iOS apps, reports say.
"Snapchat is developing a new product called 'Stories Everywhere' with a goal of making 'Stories' available outside the app for the first time and kick-starting the app's stagnant user growth," technology website Cheddar reported late Wednesday.
The company is also likely to makes it easier to share videos on other platforms through a web player that prompts people to sign up and download the app, the report added.
